Book Review: Aliens: The World's Leading Scientists on the Search for Extraterrestrial Life

“When you think about it, the vast majority of conscious, thinking creatures in this kind of universe will be single individuals who have fluctuated into existence all by themselves—just long enough to think, ‘Hm, I seem to be all alone in this universe,' and then die.”

Are We The Only?

There is the probability that we are the only form of intelligent life in our entire galaxy.

There is also the probability that we could be the only intelligent form of life in this universe.

This idea is based on one inspirational chapter from ‘Aliens: The World's Leading Scientists on the Search for Extraterrestrial Life' outlining the series of extremely improbable events that have led to the evolution, and technological development of our species.

A lot of empty real-estate out there.

Life Was Dumb For A LONG Time

After all, it took roughly 13.7 billion years for life to be created on our planet (from the inception of our universe, up until a sociable ape started dominating its environment).

Even the dinosaurs existed for a million times longer than humans, yet they were no more intelligent than your common chicken or dog, hunting and being hunted for its entire lifespan.

And in the minuscule chance that there once existed an intelligent, biological species capable of the same technology as the human species…

It has, most likely, gone extinct a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away.

It took a very long time to get here

Just Bacteria Out There

The most popular idea now, is that if there could be alien life in other parts of our galaxy, it is most likely  bacterial

It will remain so for millions of years, unless its planetary environment becomes hospitable…

Just as millions of years of having underwater vegetation added oxygen to our atmosphere, and completely changed the ecosystem of our own planet.

And we could potentially be the first.

Any life out there, probably just looks like this bacteria-filled pit. Grand Prism Spring

Entertainment & Hard-Facts

Nonetheless, this book covers all aspects pertaining to aliens; from the science-fiction created to entertain, to the down and dirty big data, chemistry, biology, physics and astronomy of it all.

It's well written by different authors, and the chapters flow well, according to the category of focus (sometimes entertainment, sometimes history, sometimes theory, and sometimes hard facts).

What I like most, is the simple IDEA of this book;

Light-Speed Discovery

The FACT that scientists are making new discoveries about the cosmos at an amazing EXPONENTIAL rate.

Every few years, we will have learned 10 facts, for every 1 fact learned, the few years before it, thus compounding our knowledge, advancements, and understanding faster than ever before.

Basically, in the next 5 years, we will discover more, than we have discovered in the last 20 years.

The technology that will push us forward, is being upgraded at a breathtaking speed, so this book is a primer on what we understand now, right this minute.

The Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), to rapidly advance our understanding of the universe.

I must read if you love the idea of Aliens, Planets, Science and Technology. 5/5 Stars for its niche.

Always keep learning.
