The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months
Book Author: Brian Moran, Michael Lennington
This is a planning book, that has a heavy emphasis on staying motivated through developing a vision. The concept involves dividing your 1-year goals, into 12-week segments instead. Most people procrastinate until the end of the year to accomplish big goals. Instead, we baby-step things into 12-week segments, with accountability after each week.
You overlay a vision of what you want within the long-term (5-10 years) and medium-term (2-5 years). Then you build a week-by-week action plan.
Each week, you have actionable, quantitative steps (contact x people, lose x pounds, dedicate x hours to whatever), and you slowly, inch by inch, day by day, week by week, accomplish these steps.
I could resonate on the ‘vision' part, when I dedicated myself to the slogan ‘have an online business that allows you to live a life of freedom, fun, and adventure'. This was 4 years ago? I'm not sure. I didn't plan anything, but rather made that the meaning of life at the time… the vision.
There is a HEAVY emphasis on sticking to the plan, without straying too much from the game plan (unless your are a very experienced planner, or the plan doesn't work after 3-4 weeks). Perhaps, it's counter to the ‘LEAN' method, of adaptive planning (change the plan, on the go). Or the 12-weeks is refering to ‘milestones' where things should already be accomplished… Or the 12 weeks is about building consistency in your life.
I'm not much of a planner (more of a task-manager), but having a greater-picture of where you want to go with your idea/life/whatever, will definitely get you there. Your subconcious mind will help you, along with a bit of active goal-setting and achieving.
I recommend this book for planners, visionaries, or simply building your conscious/unconcious awareness for ‘methods of planning'.
Quote of the Day:
Think about this: people earning $1,000,000 per year aren't working 10 times harder than people earning $100,000. In fact, they are sometimes working less – but they are working differently.
The fact is, you won't reach a breakthrough if you are not willing to change how you currently allocate your time. To get different results, you will have to do things differently and do different things.
