Living in Mexico City For A Year Part 3: Outskirts, Downtown, Fancy Neighborhoods & Basilicas

Living the Good Life In Mexico City

This wasn’t my first or second time living in Mexico City. I lived in Mexico City previously for a month in 2018, and then for 2 more months in Mexico City in 2019.

Out of sheer circumstance, I ended up returning here in 2020 because I got kicked out of Minsk Belarus during the start of the pandemic of 2020.

From Minsk Belarus, I would return to Canada, but instead of staying here, I decided to pack my things immediately, and fly down to Mexico which had much more relaxed pandemic restrictions.

If this is your first time seeing Mexico City, I would recommend Mexico City part 1 and Mexico City Part 2. The following is a collection of various adventures in Mexico City from 2020.

Amazing Apartment & Amazing Neighborhood

Having negotiated an amazing price for an apartment, I moved into one of the best neighborhoods in Mexico City called “Roma Norte”. It’s in a small zone of relatively safe areas, which includes the neighborhoods of Condesa, Hipodromo, and Polanco.

From his apartment, I would take a really deep dive into Mexican culture, really improve my Spanish, train in boxing in Parque Mexico during a full-blown pandemic, and get to see as much of this absolutely massive and lively city as possible.

View Point Adventures into Dangerous Territory

During the final months of 2020, a lady friend decided to visit me from Monterrey. I thought a fun adventure would be to go up a mirador or “viewpoint” a bit north of where I was staying, to get a better view of the city.

Unfortunately, this viewpoint was actually an array of Cellular towers in a rough part of Mexico City that was closed off to anyone but the police.

Downtown Mexico City

The following day, we decided to venture into the core of Mexico City. You have to keep in mind, that even the downtown core is enormous, and would take at least a month to fully traverse and realize. Despite being here multiple times, I barely scratched the surface of all the sights and sounds of downtown Mexico.

Polanco, Mexico City

The following day, we walked around a bit within the middle-upper-class neighborhood of Polanco. This area has much more trendy and expensive bars and restaurants. While I wouldn’t say it’s the logistically better place to live, it definitely has a certain charm and reminds me of certain parts of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Artsy San Angel Neighborhood

A bit further south of the center of Mexico City is the artsy neighborhood of San Angel. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this area was completely inactive at the time (you can check out Mexico City Part 2 for San Angel photos).

But either way, this is a nice, bohemian, and artistic old neighborhood of Mexico City you should be able to check out by now.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Basilica

In the complete opposite north of the center of Mexico City, is the Lady of Guadalupe Basilica. I came here twice just for the pleasure of getting to know the inside and outside of the basilicas, churches and museums in this small area.

One of the churches acts as a museum explaining the history of the catholic church in Mexico City.

There is also a really nice photo opportunity if you walk to the top of the hill.

Conclusion

This album concludes my photos from Mexico City for the year 2020. I absolutely enjoyed Mexico City during this time, since there were very few quarantine rules, and you could freely move around in Mexico City.

Over the span of a year, I could also balance out getting to know the city, and being able to work and train in Boxing, without feeling like I would be missing out on anything.

Nonetheless, stay tuned for Living in Mexico City Part 4 which covers the year of 2021.

As always,

Leonidas
