The Ancient Russian City of Suzdal

Russia Travel

While staying in the city of Ivanovo, Russia (the city of brides), with my grandmother and mother, it was time for an adventure.

The Ancient Russian City of Suzdal

From 1024 to 1125, Suzdal was the first capital of Russia, while Moscow was still a ‘cluster of cowsheds’.

From the 16th to the 18th century, many large investments were made into the city by the royal family, and by various merchants, to build as many churches as possible.

In 1864, local merchants failed to convince the town to build the Trans-Siberian Railway through it.

Thus the town remained a religious backwater village, and was bypassed completely by the industrialization of the 20th century.

The beauty of the town is in its reminder of an older time in Russian history, with its magnificent churches, and many wooden houses.

Definitely, a fascinating tourist spot to visit.
